Which suits your driveway
Gravel (metal) or concrete? For a lot of New Zealand driveways - especially long, rural and lifestyle ones - the answer comes down to cost, length and how you'll maintain it. Here's the honest comparison. We build metal and gravel driveways; this is to help you weigh it up.
Cost - gravel wins, especially over distance
A gravel driveway costs a lot less per square metre than concrete, and the gap grows the longer the drive. On a long rural or lifestyle driveway, concreting the whole run gets expensive fast, while a properly built metal driveway gives you a solid, tidy surface for a fraction of the cost.
Maintenance and repair
Concrete is low-maintenance once it's down. Gravel needs the occasional top-up and reshape - but when it does, it's cheap and quick, and there's no cracking to chase. Damage to a concrete drive is a much bigger fix. A well-formed gravel drive with the surface water managed holds up for years.
Which suits where
Short, high-traffic urban entrance where you want zero maintenance and a hard finish - concrete makes sense. Long, rural or lifestyle driveway where cost and length matter - gravel is usually the smart call, provided the base and drainage are done properly. That base is exactly what we get right.
