Turf gives you an instant lawn the day it's laid. That's its whole advantage. The catch is cost - it's by far the most expensive per square metre - so it earns its place on small, high-profile areas where you want green now, not over a big section or paddock.

Hydroseeding sprays seed, mulch, fertiliser and water in one pass. You get quick germination and even coverage for a fraction of the cost of turf, plus the mulch controls erosion on exposed ground. Over a large area - a new build, a paddock, a bank - it's the sweet spot on cost and result.

Broadcasting seed by hand is the cheapest option and fine for small, flat, well-prepared ground. Over a big or sloping area it's slow, the coverage is patchy, and seed washes or blows off before it takes. What you save up front you often spend again patching it.
