On a commercial site, bare soil is a liability. It moves in the rain, it ends up in the stormwater system, and it holds up the next trade. Hydroseeding puts seed, mulch, fertiliser and water down in a single pass, so the surface is locked in and the grass is away without waiting on a turf delivery or a hand-seeding crew.
We run our own hydroseeding unit alongside the digger fleet, which means one contractor can shape the ground and then grass it. For commercial clients that is one contract, one programme and one crew to chase.
Where it earns its keep
Subdivision batters and road edges once the earthworks are signed off. Stripped sites that have to sit through a winter before the next stage. Stockpile faces and bunds. Large lot frontages a developer needs looking presentable before titles issue. Pasture reinstatement after a services trench or a haul road.
Anywhere the area is big enough that hand seeding is slow, patchy and expensive, the hydroseeder is the cheaper answer, and it goes down far faster.
Erosion and sediment control
The mulch in the mix holds the soil surface in place from the day it is sprayed, well before the roots have done anything. On a fresh batter that is the gap where the damage usually happens, so getting cover on quickly is the point of the exercise.
It is the practical way to stop a stripped face washing into the stormwater system while the grass establishes underneath it.
Earthworks and grass from one contractor
Plenty of outfits can spray seed. Fewer can shape the ground first. Because earthworks is our main trade, we prepare the surface properly before anything goes down, and the finish is only ever as good as the ground under it.
The fleet runs from 2.7 tonne diggers at 1.5m wide for tight access up to a 5.5 tonne machine, with a tracked dumper and tipper and 6-wheeler trucks for cartage. Site prep and grass establishment sit under one contract instead of two.
Programming it in
The best result comes from spraying as soon as the shaping is finished and the surface is still right, rather than months later once it has weathered and hardened off. If hydroseeding is in the programme, tell us early and we will sequence it against the earthworks so the machines are not brought back for a second visit.
